Apprentices in Boxing Day limelight

Apprentice jockeys will be in the spotlight when the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) stages the National Sports Council Trophy Handicap on the bumper Boxing Day horse racing programme on Tuesday at the Garrison Savannah.

It will be the seventh on the card and will be contested over 1 570 metres with 12 of the island’s top apprentices vying for glory and possibly stardom.

It took opportunities like this to help unearth to the world stage several champion jockeys, including the eight-time champion jockey and seven-time Canadian Sovereign Award-winning jockey Patrick Husbands.

Apprentice Dario Croney, with 15 career wins, rides the favourite Star Contender (123 pounds). His first win came in 2015 astride Anya Rose. Kemar Kelly, winner of 12 races, partners Spend D Money (120) who is one to consider. Jamali Farrell, who rides Ubuntu (124) has won three races with Kittkat.

Female rider Cadejah Arthur has three famous wins astride Shakedemupnoble but her mount Pure Fresh Milk (113) is a long shot. Kemar Chase rode two winners at Century Downs in Canada and his mount Milk For You (120) looks dangerous. (LY)
