China is “closely monitoring” the escalating crime situation in Haiti, says the country’s Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean, Cai Wai.
Gangs now control much of the capital, Port-au-Prince following President Jovenel Moïse’s 2021 assassination.
Acting President Ariel Henry, has appealed for armed foreign intervention to help stabilize the country. To his call, Canada recently deployed Royal Canadian Navy vessels off the coast of Haiti in an effort to steam widespread insecurity and gang violence in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing in Beijing, Cai said while Haiti does not have any formal diplomatic ties to the PRC but rather Taiwan, it’s a situation that has drawn the attention of his country.
Nation News’ Akeel Lovell asked Cai if China was willing to intervene.
He said where possible they are willing to help “alleviate the difficulties of Haiti”, noting that China has come to Haiti’s aid before, referring to its humanitarian assistance after it was rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010. (AL)
