Enhanced package’ for cut workers

Only 52 of the 175 workers at the Arawak Cement Plant in St Lucy are expected to keep their jobs as the company is set to undergo a major change in the operating model.

The board of Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), the parent company, recently passed a resolution to shift the focus from exporting cement.

“In the interest of its continued viability, Arawak Cement Company Ltd suspended its clinker production on March 15, 2023. The core operation of the company will be focused on the grinding of clinker and cement production. Arawak will continue to produce and supply cement to meet the demand of the Barbados market,” said a notice published on the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange website.

Clinker is an intermediate product used in the production of cement.

Locally, both the Barbados Workers Union and the National Union of Public Workers have been locked in negotiations regarding settlements for the workers.  (Nation News)
