Survey respondents prefer new Crop Over route

Masqueraders, spectators and vendors have all given the nod to the new Grand Kadooment route from Warrens to the National Botanical Gardens along the ABC Highway.

This is according to a survey conducted by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) after the August 1 jump.

Overall, 52.73 per cent of the total respondents preferred this year’s route compared to 47.29 per cent who wanted the old route from the National Stadium to the Mighty Grynner Highway. Diving deeper into the numbers, that was 50.19 per cent of masqueraders, 53.8 per cent of spectators and 54.17 per cent of vendors, the three groups surveyed.

Respondents who did not take part in this year’s events cited pandemic fears, financial reasons due to the price of costumes and flights and length of the route as major factors, said a release from the NCF.

The majority of the respondents who are between the ages of 18 and 44 and female, said they were notified and kept abreast of Crop Over happenings via the Internet. The respondents were mostly Barbadian with input from people of the region, United States, Canada and Britain.

Of those who jumped for Crop Over 2022, 47.84 per cent gave their experience a five-star rating, 34.9 per cent four-star, 12.16 per cent three-star, 3.53 per cent two-star and 1.57 per cent one-star.

Dr Shantal Munro Knight, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for culture said back in August that the NCF would be seeking feedback from the public via an independent survey.

“It was a valuable and informative exercise that helps us as we go to the drawing board and conceptualise what Crop Over 2023 will look like,” she said. (PR/SAT)
