Ready for take-off

The elusive dream of an air bridge between Africa and the Caribbean may just be a mere few months away from finally becoming a reality.

This was disclosed yesterday by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley during the closing press conference of the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum, which was held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

She noted that during the forum which began on Thursday, where several agreements were made, priority was given to the establishment of direct flights, beginning with charters to Barbados.

“The reality is that we started more serious conversations than I have seen before. As recent as yesterday (Thursday) evening, my Ministry of Tourism and International Transport met with a number of persons from the bank [Afreximbank] and from other countries.

“We are trying to see how best we can create a framework that would allow for charters first, if necessary. Barbados has indicated that we are prepared to work with one or two African countries to be able to do the co-marketing because we have to be able to sustain the traffic,” Mottley said. (CLM)
