PROVIDENCE – A difficult pitch and their inability to adapt against disciplined bowling undermined West Indies and opened the door for Bangladesh to claim a six-wicket win in the rain-affected first One-Day International yesterday in Guyana.
Sent in to bat on a tacky Guyana National Stadium pitch after rain delayed the start by two hours and 15 minutes and reduced the contest to 41 overs a side, the Windies laboured to 149-9.
A target of 150 was never going to enough once the pitch settled down later in the match, and the Bangladeshis (151-4) cruised to their first win on this tour of the Caribbean to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
It was the ninth ODI win on the trot for Bangladesh against the Caribbean side.
The second ODI will be played on Wednesday at the same venue, and Nicholas Pooran and company will need to adjust quickly if they are to draw level in the series, which ends on Saturday at the same venue.
