High oil prices a major obstacle, says Santia

When it came to energy consumption, Barbados found itself in a catch-22 position over the last year.

Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw made this clear yesterday, revealing that though the country had done all the right things to conserve energy by reducing costs a whopping 23 per cent, Government was still forced to fork out an additional $161 million due to the skyrocketing price of oil.

Addressing a plenary workshop on energy conservation at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, she said Government fully understood what was required to help reduce Barbados’ carbon footprint.

She admitted market forces were making things quite difficult, but Government continued to put things in place to make Barbados a competitive player in the energy market. (BA/PR)
