Crews from the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) descended on Durants Development, Christ Church, early yesterday morning to undertake the arduous task of removing a large heap of garbage dumped on vacant land by a mentally ill resident.
While some neighbours breathed a sigh of relief, they are pleading with officials from the Psychiatric Hospital to pick up the woman, known as “Michelle”, before she starts collecting and piling garbage again.
It was the second time in about two years that the SSA has removed garbage dumped by her.
SSA public relations officer Carl Padmore said they were moved to act after seeing the story highlighted in the NATION.
“We were not aware of this, so we did our own investigations and we decided that we would come and offer some assistance,” Padmore said, pointing out that three ten-metre trucks, a “Bobcat” and a front loader were used during the clean-up, which was led by operations manager Michael Nicholls. (MB)
