Fynn Armstrong’s mother Natasha was anxious when her flight last Friday from Miami to Kingston, Jamaica, was delayed by more than a day.
She feared she would not make it in time to see her 15-year-old son compete at the 49th CARIFTA Games after being told the next available flight was on Monday (today) when the meet would be finished.
Instead, she rode for seven-and-a-half hours from Montego Bay to Kingston on an express bus with no luggage, and arrived in time to watch Fynn not only compete, but win Barbados’ first gold medal of the games, in the Under-17 boys’ 3000 metres on Sunday.
Her journey started in Barbados, but due to a lighting storm, she had to take a taxi to Fort Lauderdale before flying to Montego Bay. She missed his first race, the 1500-metre event, where he finished fifth in 4 minutes 14.18 seconds.
“I’m very proud of him. He did amazing, better than we expected,” she told the Nation during a post-race interview.
“My hands were clammed but I had every faith that he could do it,” she added.
Fynn Armstrong, a Harrison College student who also competes in the triathlon, was elated to have his mother in the crowd.
“[It was great for mum to be here] hopefully, all the family could have been here, but they have jobs. To my family, I love you guys a lot,” he said.
He will compete in the CARIFTA Triathlon in Bermuda in September. (AGB)
