Wednesday night’s shooting death of a young man who was freed of a murder charge and released from prison five days earlier underscores the seriousness of illegal guns in Barbados.
So said Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell, as the news broke that 20-year-old Joshua Shakeem Alexander was gunned down as he sat in the verandah of his 1st Avenue, Jackson, St Michael home with his family.
Alexander had been charged with the June 16, 2019 murder of Emelien Peter, who was shot and killed while he was among a group of men in Well Gap, Cave Hill, St Michael.
However, last Friday the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions discontinued the murder matter against Alexander, ending his stay on remand at Dodds Prison. He was released that same morning. (HLE)
