Developers are being urged to ensure wheelchair ramps and other measures put in place to assist disabled people are fit for purpose.
Founder of Walk Proud Again charity Suzanne Watts made the call yesterday, stressing that although there were ramps in major commercial areas, many of them were not effective.
“Accessibility is still a huge issue. I drove past Oistins today and I saw a little ramp leading to a sidewalk, but the ramp was too narrow and the gradient was too steep. Even in Bridgetown, persons who have tried to traverse them expressed difficulty because they are not to the gradient.
“So even though persons may be making efforts to make Barbados accessible, we have a very long way to go. So there needs to be a code and stipulations in place to improve the situation so there could be fewer barriers,” she said. (TG)
