Barbados’ top athletes are set to get big bucks with increased funding to the tune of $1.6 million.
With a major focus on winning more medals on the world’s biggest sporting stages, the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) has made huge financial investments on the island’s best sportsmen and women.
The new funding model was announced yesterday by BOA vice-president Cammie Burke during a press conference at the Wildey, St Michael headquarters.
“We did do some investing before but it was not achieving what we wanted to get from the athletes. The funding that we were providing before was just meeting minuscule needs and athletes certainly deserve more than what we were giving them. We sat down and we conceptualised this new funding,” Burke told reporters. (AG-B)
