After several years of being in a dilapidated state, the jetty in Speightstown, St Peter, has been restored.
It has undergone structural repairs and been reinforced using environmentally friendly materials.
Yesterday, during a special ceremony held at the Speightstown Esplanade to recommission the jetty, officials said it will enhance the social experience of residents and visitors, and expand opportunities for fisherfolk, restaurants and bars, retail shops, and those in leisure and commercial sailing and marine recreation.
Acting Minister of Tourism and International Transport Kirk Humphrey said Speightstown was rich in history and culture.
“Once one of Barbados’ busiest ports, Speightstown has undergone a renaissance of sorts. It is precisely because of its unique cultural heritage, architectural and natural resources, it must be integrated more into national tourism and economic development,” he said.
“The jetty, restored at a cost of $1.2 million, signals the possibilities for even greater accessibility to Speightstown and the north via water taxis, and holds the potential to bring new life to the community with expanded opportunities for fisher folk and businesses.
“It will bring increased human traffic that will enhance the prospects for economic viability of what exists and what is to come,” he added.
The jetty was repaired by the same company – Mrenco Marine Limited – that upgraded the one at Oistins, Christ Church, and the jetties and berths at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex recently.
Parliamentary representative for St Peter Colin Jordan said Speightstown had a special place in the hearts of northern folk and the jetty will open fresh possibilities for them.
The event was also staged to launch the 2022 Sir Charles Williams Barbados International Fishing Tournament which runs until Saturday.
Chairman of the Barbados Game Fishing Association, Ralph White, said there were 22 vessels registered to take part in the activities. (SB)
