Victim’s father calls for change

As he agonises over the loss of one of his sons, a father is calling for answers to the growing intolerance and rage in society.

Peter Hinds is pondering why his son Corey Hinds’ life was taken at the age of 37.

The grieving father said something had to be done or more parents would lose their children senselessly.

Help

“We can sit in our cubicles and figure ‘this would never happen to me’ but until the powers that be try to help these young people, it will happen and it will keep happening.

“This violence is going on island-wide, it’s a societal issue. We need people to come out, enjoy themselves and leave the violence behind,” he said.

Sitting at his home yesterday in Upper Carlton, St James, where Corey lived, he tried to describe his feelings.

“I am trying to hold up as any parent would under the circumstances. In a situation like this, people are empathetic but you don’t want to go through a death to bring that out. We need to be a more tolerant and cohesive society,” he said.

Investigation

Police have launched an unnatural death investigation into Corey’s killing. Initial reports state the deadly stabbing was reported around 11:55 p.m. on Saturday. It occurred along another area of Upper Carlton.

“A dispute between two men occurred prior to one man being stabbed. That injured man was transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” the police statement read.

Hinds said he was attending a nearby function when he heard the terrible news. He said he could not bring himself to see his son.

“I didn’t have the strength to go to the scene or the next thing they would have to do is call two ambulances.

“I hoped the paramedics could have saved him but, unfortunately, his injuries were so severe, he succumbed to them,” he said.

Challenges

Hinds was frank when it came to describing his son. He said many parents in his situation tended to only see the good but he had to be realistic.

“He was a really nice person but he had some mental health challenges. He was not violent or anything, he was not a bad child, but he had his challenges.

“There were times he would rub you the wrong way but these days young people don’t have tolerance, you rub someone the wrong way and they will kill you,” he said, adding, “He wasn’t the worst but he wasn’t the best.”

Hinds said Corey was one of his four children and did not have any children of his own. He said he was unemployed but once used to work as an air-conditioning technician. (CA)
