Barbados has bowed to pressure and shifted the pension policy in the public sector, says former Leader of the Opposition Bishop Joseph Atherley.
He said it was one of the shockers coming out of yesterday’s Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals delivered by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in the House of Assembly.
Atherley, chair of the Alliance Party for Progress (APP), said the package was more of a further expose of the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) manifesto, pieces from the Throne Speech and elements of a Budget.
He said that one of the shocks was the pension qualification where previously public servants could serve 33-and-a-third years but that has now moved to 40 years. While he anticipated a shift, Atherley did not imagine it would have been so steep.
