Prime Minister’s Cup kicks off at Friendship

The highly anticipated Prime Minister’s Cup 2024 kicks off on Monday, August 26, with 24 teams competing for the chance to win the grand prize of BDS $100 000.

Notre Dame FC get the semi-professional competition under way with their 7 p.m. clash against Deacons at Friendship, Hothersal Turning, St Michael. Later that day, Parish Land will take on St Andrew Lions at 9 p.m.

Preliminary matches will be played at Gall Hill playing field Christ Church; Weymouth, St Michael; Bridgefield, St Thomas and Greens, St George.

Some of the knockout matches will be hosted in Wildey at the Barbados Football Association’s (BFA) Turf. This phase begins with the Round of 16 phase which will take place on the weekend of October 5 and 6, followed by the quarter-finals happening on October 26 and 27.

The semi-finals are scheduled for November 17 and 18 and the tournament’s grand finale will take place on November 30 at the refurbished Kensington Oval. The last two teams will battle for their chance to win the inaugural title at 9 p.m. and the third place playoff will precede the previous day at the BFA Turf.  

This tournament was billed as being a huge boost for local footballers who will receive a match fee of $125 in the group stage, $150 in the Round of 16 stage, $200 for the quarter-finals, $250 for the semi-finals and $300 for the final.

The 24 participating clubs include all ten teams in the BFA Premier League, the top six from Division One and the top four each from the Second and Third Division based on the 2023 standings with more than 600 players expected to be involved.  (JC)
