Zazzy gallops to easy victory

Racing enthusiasts attending the third and final edition of the Old Brigand Rum evening of races staged at the Garrison Savannah on Friday evening were truly entertained by a brilliant display of acceleration from the favourite Zazzy.

Under jockey Rickey Walcott, the Nalicia Cozier-owned three-year-old bay filly by Practical Joker out of IBOk splashed to her sixth career win from nine track appearances as she captured the feature Foursquare Rum Distillery Trophy Handicap over 1 100 metres for 110-90 and below horses.

The fair-sized crowd, which braved two heavy downpours, was treated to an incredible 20-minute musical cultural experience with electrifying performances featuring a tuk band, stilt walkers, shaggy bear dancers and mother sallies in conjunction with the National Cultural Foundation and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

No sooner had they cleared the track, Zazzy calmly brought the grand evening to a close, winning, comfortably on the et track by five lengths in 1:07.2 minutes for trainer Jean Marc-Cozier.

Honours

Major Dan was pressured from the gates by Show The Money, who soon rescued the lead approaching the two furlong marker. Around that time Zazzy, who broke on top, was now repositioned on the outside to strike.

Entering the home turn, she took command for the popular win with Sir Jimmy and apprentice Jamali Farrell back in second, followed by Show The Money with apprentice Aaron Daniel ahead of the Lester Edwards-ridden Major Dan fourth.

Honours on the seven-race programme were shared by the Springhead Stable of owner Gay Smith, its trainer, Edward Walcott Jr, jockey Antonio Bishop and groom Kemar Mahon.

They all celebrated a beautiful brace thanks to Emperor and Super Model, while apprentice Devante Prescod doubled up when booting across the line High Velocity and Marengo.

The shocking pink body and blue stars with pink sleeves of Gay Smith were evident when Emperor, a three-year-old son of Tapit’s Code out of Majestical Emperor won impressively.

They secured the West Indian-bred Three-Year-Old Maidens Allotted Weights Race over 1 570 metres by three lengths in one minute, 40 seconds flat. Three races later, Super Model snatched a superb short head triumph over a returning Intempo in the R L Seale Trophy Handicap at the above distance.

Apprentice Prescod endured his best day in the irons, winning astride High Velocity who surged from the back to deny the in-form

Priceless in the Three-Year-Olds and Older rated 45-27 Handicap over 1 800 metres.

The six-year-old son of Happy Memories out of Rebound, which is trained by Andrew Nunes, won by one length in 1:56 seconds flat for joint owners John Patrick Drake, Gloria Drakes, Luel Rawlins and Aldith Rawlins.

Prescod then showed mighty resolve when he conjured up a last-minute resurgent effort from the leader Marengo to retake the top position in race number three.

Owned by Melrose Racing, the eight-year-old son of American Dance out of Constant Girl gave trainer Robert Peirce the perfect 50th birthday gift when taking the Three-Year-Olds and older rated 6040 sprints by a neck in a time of 1:06.3 minutes. (LY)
