The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Hurricane Watch for Barbados, as Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before reaching the island late Sunday night. On its current path, Beryl’s centre is projected to pass approximately 45 km (26 miles) south of Barbados.
As of 5 a.m. on today, Tropical Storm Beryl was located near 9.8N 45.5W, about 1,580 km (981 miles) east-southeast of Barbados, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) and moving west at 21 mph (33 km/h). The minimum central pressure is, 1001 mb.
Residents should prepare for strong winds that could damage homes and properties, along with potential flash flooding, particularly in flood-prone areas. Severe thunderstorms may also cause disruptions to power and utility services.
Marine conditions are expected to worsen, with a small craft and high surf warning already in effect due to above-normal sea swells anticipated from Sunday night.
The public is advised to follow guidance from the Department of Emergency Management and local officials.
