BUT: Shift 11-Plus date

The Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) wants the Ministry of Education to shift the tentative May 7 date for the 2024 Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination (BSSEE) to later in that month or early June.

General secretary of the BUT Herbert Gittens said two additional weeks would go a long way in helping the estimated 3 500 children expected to sit this year’s BSSEE, commonly referred to as the 11-Plus, to be better prepared for the examination.

Gittens and president Rudy Lovell also questioned why the union was not consulted before the tentative date was announced.

They both agreed the date should be pushed back to give additional preparation time to students from several primary schools whose classes were disrupted due to environmental issues that plagued their respective school plants. (AH)
