The Kolij Lions roared loudly on the court and in the stands as Harrison College mauled the Barbados Community College Eagles 75-51 in the final to capture the senior title in the Cooperators’ General Insurance Schools’ Basketball Competition on Friday in the Gymnasium at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Both teams dominated the competition for secondary schools and colleges up to the final, with defending champions Eyrie Eagles being shocked from early as Kolij harried and marked them off of the ball to establish leads of 8-2 and 14-6.
BCC battled back to 15-19 at the end of the first quarter, but HC smartly pressured the league MVP Tristan Yarde, denying the 6ft 4in power forward any easy flights to the basket while stripping his teammates of the ball.
The BCC tried a similar tactic on Nayiib Browne, who was later named finals MVP, but not with matching results.
While Browne was often double and triple teamed, he rode the threat, switching his role to point guard and dishing off the ball to his teammates, who calmly delivered, with Kolij’s supporters screaming in delight. HC outpaced the Eagles 22-8 in the second quarter. (KB)
