Mottley tells Bajans to boost numbers

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has renewed her call for Barbadians to increase the population.

She said if the numbers continue to contract, as they have since 2010, the country might be unable to survive in the future.

“What we effectively have is an ageing society and a contraction in numbers as persons who are productive citizens working day in, day out. We can’t survive as a nation if we allow that to become our future.

“Along the way, we need to be able to deal with the things that will give us the best chance even as we try to deal with that major problem of lack of population,” Mottley said.

The Prime Minister was speaking during the question and answer segment of the 48th Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lecture on Monday at the Frank Collymore Hall, which was delivered by Professor in economics of innovation and public value at University College London, Mariana Mazzucato. (TSG)
