Yearwood: Poor being punished

The “damning report” of the Auditor General not only reflects the inefficiencies of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP), but also the governance strategy of giving more to the rich at the expense of the poor.

President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Dr Ronnie Yearwood made that charge on Sunday night during a St Philip South branch meeting at Clara’s Bar, Nursery Drive.

“The Auditor General’s Report reflects a transfer of wealth from the poorest to the richest in society because what bad governance entails is that the poorest are often punished by bad governance. The [inefficiency] of this Government is exemplified by the fact that [Minister in the Ministry of Finance] Ryan Straughn could not defend their position . . . . The fact remains that the context is there to discredit the work of an agency that works on behalf of the people of Barbados,” he said.

He admitted that both BLP and DLP administrations had fallen short when it came to the Auditor General’s Report so Government needs to accept the findings and pledge to the country that better will be done.  (CLM)
