Guyana Amazon Warriors Women recorded their first win of the 2023 Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League with a 21 run victory over defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
Captain Stefanie Taylor won the toss and chose to bat for the third successive time this tournament, with her side posting 132 all out in 19.5 overs. The Knight Riders never really challenged the total, falling to 111-9 in their allotted overs.
Once again there was a strong powerplay from the Amazon Warriors with them recovering from the loss of key batter Suzie Bates to still reach 44-1 after six overs. Kiwi opener Sophie Devine was at her fluent best once again, adding 48 runs to scores of 103* and 42 to stretch her lead as the highest run scorer in the competition with 193 runs in total. The next best is Barbados Royals’ Erin Burns’ total of 93 runs.
When she fell at 92-2 after 12.2 overs, the Warriors still looked on course for a big score with West Indian international Shermaine Campbelle joining former West Indies captain Taylor at the crease. However that was not to be the case as fifteen balls later both were back in the pavillion to leave the visitors 106-4. From there the side collapsed to 132 all out with Taylor (32) and Natasha McClean (12) to only two players bar Devine to reach double figures.
In reply, the Knight Riders were always behind the run rate as the top order of Marie Kelly (16), Lee-Ann Kirby (8) and Barbadian Kycia Knight (19) all got starts but chewed up too many deliveries to challenge. Hard hitting Barbadian Deandra Dottin was resolute in her efforts to win the game single handedly with a knock of 35 runs from 19 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.
Once Dottin was outdone by a Devine short ball which she skied to the wicketkeeper Campbelle, the game was effectively in the seventeenth over with the score 98-7.
Player of the match Devine went on to dismiss West Indies Under 19 Zaida James two overs later to finish a fine evening’s work with figures of 2-27 in her four overs.
Defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders now need to beat already qualified finalists Barbados Royals by a decent margin later today in order to stand a chance of qualifying for Sunday’s final.
These two sides will then rematch on Saturday which looks to be a shoot off for a place in the final.
