UWI looks beyond Barbados for boost

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill is focusing beyond these shores in order to bolster its enrolment.

During the UWI postgraduate students’ orientation ceremony in LT1 of the Roy Marshall Teaching Complex on Tuesday evening, Pro Vice Chancellor and principal of the university, Professor Clive Landis told the Daily Nation Barbados’ age demographics were unfavourable to the institution.

“We recognised the demographics in Barbados were going in the wrong direction so our emphasis now is more on international students and that now is bearing fruit. We want to change the mix a bit which is good for the campus . . . as the demographics are not in our favour,” he said.

The UWI principal explained Barbados was an ageing society and a gradually ageing population, an issue reflected in other English-speaking Caribbean countries, was not the best for a university. (CLM)
