Celebrating the Year of the Youth

Government is doing more to continue to uplift young people as they promote the Year of the Youth.

On Friday, scores of youth from several groups gathered at the Ministry Sports and Community Empowerment’s Sky Mall, Haggatt Hall headquarters where they boarded a trailer and bus and travelled across the country to raise awareness about the Commonwealth-designated international campaign.

Senior Youth Officer in the Ministry of Youth, Elizabeth Bowen, said the motorcade was another initiative they were using to amplify the youth’s voice and address some of their concerns.

“This year has been designated the Year of the Youth by the Commonwealth, and we seek to empower, embrace and envision Barbadian youth. The Ministry is taking a bottom-up approach and we will continue our engagement of youth and community organisations to highlight their issues,” Bowen said.

Local Parish Ambassadors, Youth Parliamentarians, members of the Haynesville Youth Group, dancers and other groups were a part of the procession which departed Haggatt Hall just around 10 a.m.

Some of the spots they visited included Warrens Office Complex, and the National Sports Council camp at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, where there were giveaways.

Bowen said one of their major stops would be the National Disabilities Unit.

“We will visit to let them know they are included in the year of the youth activities,” she added. (TG)
