A deportee who was found guilty of raping and committing an act of serious indecency on his then seven-year-old stepdaughter was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the No. 5 Supreme Court yesterday.
“The rape of a child where there was an abuse of trust cannot be minimised and is of a very serious nature,” Justice Pamela Beckles told the stepfather yesterday.
“And the offender must expect a lengthy sentence which reflects the court and the public’s intolerance of such offence. In my judgment, justice and the protection of the public can and should be achieved by this long sentence,” the judge declared.
The man, who was the boyfriend of the child’s mother, had denied having unlawful sexual intercourse with the girl between May 1 and June 30, 2013; buggering her between the same dates and committing an act of serious indecency on her, also between the same dates. (HLE)
