Signs of the times

Some business owners are confronting a new challenge following a recent directive from the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) to remove sandwich boards and other advertising materials from roadways, sidewalks and also street furniture by next Friday.

The ministry’s move, aimed at addressing safety concerns and maintaining clear pathways, has ignited a debate about the balance between supporting small businesses and ensuring public safety.

The MTW’s public notice comes in response to an increasing trend of business owners chaining advertising boards to road signs and placing them along roadways and sidewalks. Officials argue that these practices often obstruct motorists’ line of sight or impede pedestrian walkways.

Citing Section 13 of the Highway Act, CAP 289, the ministry asserts its authority to remove and dispose of any items wilfully placed on highways. Non-compliant individuals may face fines and be required to cover removal costs. (DS)
