Engineers have been hired to redesign the drainage system in St Lawrence Gap and Dover, Christ Church, and there will be increased maintenance to address flooding issues.
This is according to the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) following complaints from some Syndicate, St Lawrence residents about their ongoing challenges.
“Syndicate Road in St Lawrence Gap comprises one significant drainage structure. The area has a high water table and as a result, this structure cannot be deep. The Drainage Division of the Ministry of Transport and Works has contracted engineering services to assess and redesign the drainage system in St Lawrence Gap and Dover. Syndicate Road will also be assessed,” MTW said in a statement.
It added that until permanent work can commence on improving the drainage system, the Drainage Division will increase maintenance within the St Lawrence Gap area. “This maintenance programme will be extended to Syndicate Road.”
After the intense rainfall last week, Syndicate Road continued to be affected by flooding.
“For a few years we’ve had this problem . . . . Every time it rains the road is flooded with water. It’s to the point that if it rains too much, the water comes into my yard and the house. When it’s really bad, the house floods out as well,” one man lamented.
He was not satisfied with the way the situation was dealt with previously by drainage officials.
“There is a well in the area that the water does not go down into. They came once and removed the cover, but they did not clear it out. It has been going on for too long. In addition, there are two other areas that are horrible – one in St Lawrence Gap and next to Dover playing field,” he added. (TG)
