Falcons soar in last-gasp victory over Patriots

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons pulled off a thrilling two-wicket win against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, clinching victory with just two balls to spare in a tense Caribbean Premier League (CPL) clash.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Falcons restricted the Patriots to 153-8 in their allotted 20 overs. Mohammad Amir was the star with the ball, picking up three key wickets, but it was Mikyle Louis who provided the late fireworks for the Patriots. His explosive lower-order batting added 33 runs in the final overs, propelling him to 63 off 36 balls, including a remarkable seven sixes. The Patriots, who had stumbled to 60-4 by the ninth over, managed to post a respectable total thanks to Louis’ efforts.

In reply, the Falcons looked steady in the early stages, with Brandon King and Justin Greaves building a solid foundation. However, King was trapped lbw by the express pace of Anrich Nortje in the fifth over, triggering a collapse. Wanindu Hasaranga spun a web around the Falcons’ middle order, claiming the scalps of Greaves, Sam Billings, Jewel Andrew, and Shamar Springer in a superb spell of leg-spin bowling. By the time Billings fell at 110-7, the Falcons were staring down defeat.

With 22 runs needed from the last three overs, Roshon Primus and Imad Wasim set about rescuing the chase. Dominic Drakes bowled a tight 18th over, conceding just six runs, and when Nortje removed Primus in the penultimate over, the Patriots appeared to have the upper hand.

However, Fabian Allen had other ideas. With 11 runs required from the final six balls, Allen smashed Drakes for six and four off successive deliveries, bringing the Falcons to the brink of victory. A quick single on the fourth ball sealed the win, leaving the Patriots dejected and bottom of the table after their fifth consecutive defeat.

Imad Wasim was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution of 17* and 2-24, as the Falcons soared to third place in the CPL standings. They face the Barbados Royals at Kensington Oval on September 11. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots get an opportunity to climb off the foot of the table when they play St Lucia Kings on September 10. They will be without the services of left-handed batsman Sherfane Rutherford, who has pulled out of the rest of the competition due to personal reasons. His replacement will be announced in the coming days.
