Tropical Depression No. 7 forms in the Atlantic

Weather forecasters in Barbados reported on Thursday that Tropical Depression No. 7 formed in the Atlantic about 1 140 kilometres (708 miles) east northeast of Barbados.

The weather system became better organised overnight with a more well-defined circulation as it tracks westward at 22 kilometres an hour (14 miles an hour), and maximum sustained winds are 55kph (35mph), a weather information statement from the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) indicated.

According to the statement: “Rapid development of this system is unlikely as it is affected by a dry mid-level environment and wind shear. However, the possibility for some slow development remains possible as it tracks westward over the next few days.”

Forecasters again cautioned that though the weather system will not directly impact Barbados, it will lead to a reduction of wind speeds, leading to high temperatures across the island.

“Model guidance remains in agreement that this system will pass well north of Barbados as it approaches the Leeward Islands sometime between Thursday night and Friday,” the statement added.

“This system does not pose any direct threat to Barbados. However, its northward track will result in a reduction in wind speeds with possible localised showers across some districts.”

Forecasters urged Barbadians to follow the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security guidance on how to cope with an expected heatwave over the next few days.
