Push for private sector wage hike

General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), Toni Moore says her union is pushing for a pay hike for private sector workers to cope with the rising cost of living.

Moore disclosed yesterday that the union is using 15 per cent as the starting point for negotiations, acknowledging, however, that given the fact that the private sector was not a homogeneous entity, much would depend on the financial performance of individual companies.

Her comments came one week after head of the Barbados Private Sector Association Trisha Tannis had cautioned if there were similar wage increase demands to be made of the private sector, it would likely lead to hyper-inflation and loss of jobs.

Moore revealed that as recently as Monday the union had successfully negotiated increases for workers at one local manufacturing company, noting they were actively engaged in more than 20 salary negotiations. (CLM)
