As it was his first offence, he pleaded guilty immediately, did not waste the court’s time and the items were recovered, Acting Magistrate Bernadeth John reprimanded and discharged a man who stole three doors from his former workplace.
Maleik Leshaun Peart, of No. 170 Bacarat Drive, Crystal Heights, St James, confessed to stealing the doors valued $2 456 belonging to Oran Ltd on April 12, when he appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court No. 2 yesterday.
Prosecutor Sergeant Kenmore Phillips said Peart, a porter, worked in the Parts Department and had some responsibility for making sure orders were delivered. He arranged for a freighter to collect three doors from Oran on March 27.
The freighter made the collection and left, but when operations manager Justin Oran asked Peart for the supporting documentation, what he handed over did not match the order. Questioned further by the manager, the employee did not answer but instead called the freighter and asked him to return the doors.
Once the freighter returned, he too was asked for documentation and again, it did not match the order. He also told the manager that he received the paperwork from Peart, who had called him to do a job.
The doors were left at the establishment and police contacted. (SD)
