Parliament prorogued in Antigua and Barbuda

St John’s – The Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda has been prorogued, by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, who was asked to do so by Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Friday.

Proroguing Parliament refers to the act of discontinuing a session without dissolving it.

This move comes as there is heightened speculation that the Prime Minister could announce the date for a general election very shortly.

Speaking during the recent post Cabinet press briefing,  Information Minister Melford Nicholas  hinted that am  announcement could be made during the incumbent Antigua Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) campaign launch on Monday.

“I think the smart money is on that – even I as one of the Prime Minister’s trusted deputies can’t say with any certainty what the final date will be – but I think it is fair to say that anybody who follows politics would know that at such an auspicious event it is more than likely that the Prime Minister will announce the date that he has indicated to the Governor General.

Opposition parties have been on a state of high alert for over a year after Browne hinted in summer 2021 that the election would be held early.

The election is constitutionally due in March 2023.

The election one took place on March 21, 2018 with the ABLP claiming 15 of the 17 seats. (CMC)
