Jonathan Jones bags Commonwealth bronze

Barbadian Jonathan Jones won a bronze medal in the men’s 400 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, early Sunday morning.

Jones clocked 44.89 seconds to finish third in the one-lap event.

It is the icing on what has been a long season for the 23-year-old who was eighth at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon and fourth at the collegiate championships.

This is Barbados’ second medal at the Games after Shane Brathwaite won silver in the men’s 110m hurdles.

Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga won gold in yet another personal best 44.66 seconds, once again collapsing at the finish. Pre-race favourite, Matthew Hudson-Smith of Britain, was second in 44.81.

Jamaicans Anthony Cox and Nathon Allen were sixth and eighth, respectively,  in 46.17 and 48 seconds flat. (SAT)
