A call is being made for investors to put financial resources into the Barbados Community College’s (BCC) Theatre Arts programme to sustain the industry locally and raise its profile internationally.
Describing the arts programme as “the heart of Barbadian theatre” its coordinator/tutor Michelle Hinkson-Cox said funding was critical to preserving the theatre culture.
Hinkson-Cox was speaking to the Daily Nation after the staging of a production, by her students, entitled Voices In Tribute, an appreciation to retiring dramatist Dr Yvonne Weekes for her contribution not only to BCC but to theatre in Barbados generally.
The narratives in Voices In Tribute captured the fallout shaped by slavery, the plight of the youth, the devastation of Montserrat’s Soufrière volcano, the truth about the physical image of Rachel Pringle and the mysterious folk character Specialist. (KS)
