Accompanied by pouring rain for the second time in just over three months, Gay Smith’s Hurricane made landfall at the historic Garrison Savannah around 5:43 p.m. on his way to annihilating his 11 rivals in the yesterday’s second jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown.
The featured Midsummer Creole Classic over 1 800 metres saw Hurricane sent off as the 3-4 favourite and the three-year-old bay colt by Storm Arrow out of Angelic Peace swarmed through traffic under a confident jockey Antonio Bishop to predictably destroy the field in murky conditions.
Trainer Edward Walcott Jr had him razor sharp and despite a half hour delay to the running of race seven, it only served to allow extremely dark clouds that hovered around the Garrison to burst just before the start of the Grade 1 Classic.
It was then left to Hurricane to produce the high winds that were missing and that he did in sensational fashion. (LY)
