With no cruise ships scheduled to dock in Barbados before October, taxi operators at the Bridgetown Port are anticipating a “grim” summer, with some even facing the prospect of losing their vehicles to the banks.
This was the worrying picture painted by president of the Independent Seaport Taxi Union, Anthony Eastmond and Stevon Roberts, a member of the Bridgetown Port Taxi Co-op, in an interview with the MIDWEEK NATION.
“Coming out of a 2021-22 winter season which was not really the best for the taxi operators in the Bridgetown Port, I believe that with no business in the summer it will be very hard on taxi operators,” Eastmond said.
A veteran with over two decades as a taxi driver operating in the tourism sector, Eastmond added: “It will be the first time in my 20 years that Barbados will not be seeing any business in terms of cruise. It will be very difficult. I go as far as to say this might push some of our operators back to where we were in terms of COVID-19.” (GC)
