COVID-19 update for August 17

Health authorities in Barbados reported onn Thursday four more people died as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 336 new cases of the viral illness.

According to a news release issued through the Barbados Government Information Service, the four deaths occurred between this past Friday and Tuesday.

An 88-year-old woman died this past Friday, and she was followed by two men, aged 68 and 75, and a 75-year-old woman who all died this past Tuesday, bring the number of deaths from COVID-19 to 529.

Health authorities also indicated that 161 males and 175 females tested positive for the viral illness out of 1 078 tests conducted on Wednesday, August 17 at the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory.

The positive cases comprised 41 young people under the age of 18.

There are 63 people being medically treated in government isolation facilities, and 3 335 were in home isolation.

At the same time, health authorities disclosed that 163 103 people (71.4 per cent of the eligible population)have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine under the national vaccination programme.

Of that number, 154,226 (56.9 per cent of the total population or 67.5 per cent of the eligible population) are considered fully vaccinated.

The eligible population represents anyone 12 years and older.
