Several of Barbados’ best junior athletes, who have already met the CARIFTA qualifying Games’ standard, stood out yesterday in the Sol Frank Blackman And Sada Williams Zone at the Dasani-Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC) at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
Whether setting the pace with leading times on the Ryan Brathwaite Track or securing top measurements in the field events, mostly consisting of jumps, many athletes representing their schools delivered exceptional performances.
Among the CARIFTA qualifiers was Alexandra School’s Aaron Morris, who proved too hot to handle with a time of 47.85 seconds, a new zonal record in the Under-20 Boys’ 400 metres, surpassing the previous record of 47.95 seconds held by Antoni Hoyte-Small. Morris finished ahead of Ke’iron Haynes of The Lodge School, who clocked 48.65 seconds.
Hurdler Rashad Gibson of The Lodge School, who has qualified to represent Barbados in the 400 metres hurdles at CARIFTA, clocked 14.83 seconds in the Under-20 Boys’ 110 metres hurdles, showing he can also handle the sprint hurdles. (ML)
