Barbados will begin their quest for regional glory and another piece of local sporting history today when the inaugural 2022 Caribbean Games begin in the French territory of Guadeloupe.
It’s the first time the four-day event which is organised by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) will take place featuring 29 countries, 800 Under-23 athletes and seven disciplines – track & field, netball, cycling, swimming, futsal, judo and 3×3 basketball.
“The Historic Caribbean Games will open today. To say that this is an historic moment in the Caribbean Olympic and sport movement… there are no words. This has been a journey of so many miles, overcoming so many obstacles and so many challenges, against all odds,” President Brian Lewis said yesterday during a welcome reception hosted by Le Président du Conseil Départemental Guy Losbar at his residence.
The opening ceremony took place at 7 last night at the Stade des Abymes and Barbados’ flag bearer was Judo competitor Anaiah Clarke. (AGB)
