BUT happy wage talks have started

Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) president Rudy Lovell says negotiations on salary increases in the public sector are a step in the right direction.

“Any discussion to the improvement of the lives of workers is a plus and we are happy that the Government has commenced the negotiations for salary discussions,” Lovell said yesterday after the union began its Teachers’ Week with a church service at the People’s Cathedral, Bishop’s Court Hill, St Michael.

His comments came a day after Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced that she had brought together stakeholders in labour and the Public Service to start negotiations about wage increases.

“I met on Tuesday morning with all of the unions, the Ministry of the Public Service and the Ministry of Finance and we have set off the framework for salaries and allowances and terms and conditions,” she said to the supporters at the Barbados Labour Party’s annual conference in Queen’s Park, The City.
