Barbados Women beat Guyana in cricket opener

GEORGETOWN – Barbados’ bowlers admirably defended a modest total to defeat Guyana by seven runs in their first match of the Cricket West Indies Women’s Twenty20 Blaze yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

Batting first, Barbados only managed 86 before they were bowled out in 19.2 overs as captain Hayley Matthews got the top score of 35 and Kyshona Knight chipped in with 17.

Cherry-Ann Fraser led the Guyana bowling with three for 11 while there were two wickets each for Kaysia Schultz, Mandy Mangru and Ashmini Munisar.

In reply, Guyana were restricted to 79 for nine in their 20 overs. West Indies’ wicketkeeper/batsman Shemaine Campbelle kept Guyana in the hunt for victory before she departed for 33.

West Indies’ seamers Aaliyah Alleyne (3-18) and Shakera Selman (3-26) were the main wicket-takers for Barbados while Matthews was very economical with her off-spin.
