Plea for people to give to the poor

A call has been made from the pulpit for those who have more than enough to give to the less fortunate.

It came from Reverend Dr Marlene Rosemarie Mallett, the first Barbadian female bishop in the Church of England to become the Bishop of Croydon, an area of South London and East Surrey, as she delivered the sermon at St Lawrence Anglican Church yesterday.

It was a day of celebration and thanksgiving in the St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church sanctuary, as members and guests welcomed The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, President of Barbados, who unveiled a plaque at the start of the 8:30 a.m. service to mark Mallett’s visit.

Mallett, who is also one of only two black female bishops in the Church of England, urged her listeners to fast for social justice, to ensure freedom from economic burdens. She also challenged them to provide for those in need, the marginalised, those who need clothing and housing, and work to change the system that stops them from sharing in the distribution of wealth and privileges.
