$1m appeal for tourism stalwart

Barbadians are being encouraged to show their hospitality and be kind-hearted towards tourism veteran Basil Jemmott as he fights to get back on his feet.

His brother, well-known hotelier and tourism consultant Alvin Jemmott made the plea yesterday, weeks after their family’s online fundraising effort ‘Heart Replacement For Basil Jemmott’ was posted on GoFundMe.

On that platform, they are hoping to raise US$650 000 (BDS$1.3 million) to help Basil, who was a long-time tourism educator at Hotel PomMarine (Hospitality Institute of the Barbados Community College), combat cardiac amyloidosis.

In an interview with the Saturday Sun yesterday, Alvin, a former chairman of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., told of how his younger 58-year-old brother was diagnosed with the condition after he started to feel ill in 2020. (TG)
